In 2023, according to Público, there were 368,449 citizens with Brazilian nationality residing in Portugal – 35.3% of the total. In that year, 147,252 citizens from Brazil were registered, with a total of 328,978 residence permits granted in the year in question. The amount represents 48.9% of the total amount of remittances abroad, when in 2019 it corresponded to 52.4% according to data from the Bank of Portugal, cites Executive Digest.

In total, 845.7 million euros were sent, 5.7% more than in 2023. The regulator does not have data from countries such as Nepal or Bangladesh, whose community has been growing in recent years. As for Indian citizens – the fifth largest community – the value of remittances reached 34.7 million euros in 2024, less than the 41.7 million recorded in 2023. The Chinese community sent 38.6 million euros, a value that has decreased since the peak in 2016, with 73 million euros. Angola is the second largest community in Portugal, having sent 34.2 million euros last year – up 29% compared to 2023.

In the opposite direction, remittances from Brazil to Portugal fell by 42.5% to 15.6 million euros. However, overall, the balance is historically favourable to Portugal, rising to 3.455 million euros in 2024: 4.301 million euros came in (up 4.4%) and 845.7 million went out. For the first time, last year, remittances sent from Switzerland exceeded those from France: 1.135 million and 1.109 million, up 6.7 and 2.2% respectively. The United Kingdom, with 719 million euros, is in third place.
