The socialist leader argued that the PS "is the true alternative to govern for the majority of the Portuguese people" and not for "a minority", as he considered to be happening with the PSD-CDS executive.
"The AD is showing that they have no vision for the country, nor ambition to develop this economy, they are incompetent in areas that are crucial to our collective life, such as health. It is a government for a minority, not a government for everyone. They invoke the middle class, but when push comes to shove, they govern for a minority," said Pedro Nuno Santos.
The socialist leader recalled that the PS made the State Budget viable and gave "governance conditions" to the AD in the name of stability, stressing that "he did not want these elections".
After about a year in government, the executive led by Luís Montenegro has shown itself to be a "failure" and "worsening the country's problems", he highlighted.
"The Portuguese economy was better a year ago", he said, also pointing out a series of situations in the health sector, where he blamed the AD for the "incompetence" in the management of INEM, the difficulties in accessing family doctors and the functioning of family health units.
"It is in health where the failure of AD governance is most evident. INEM's management of the crisis was incompetent (...) they promised that by 2025, there would be a family doctor for all users. By the end of March, we had more than 50 thousand people without a family doctor. But there is still a prime minister who guarantees during the campaign that it will be easy and quick to resolve the issue," he said.
Pedro Nuno Santos also highlighted the work of socialist governments in the past, pointing out the examples of the increase in average wages and pensions and investment in science, areas that he says have been ignored by the current executive.
"The PS approved the State Budget in the name of stability, the truth is that the Government is making one of the biggest cuts ever to the Foundation for Science and Technology, the main entity for funding science in Portugal", he pointed out.
For housing, he advocated a "massive investment" to respond to a problem "that affects the entire middle class".
"The measures that the AD took were measures that allowed some people to buy houses, it's true. However, as they were not accompanied by a policy to seriously expand supply, the only consequence they had was the acceleration of property prices. And today, what we have are young people who are even further away from getting a house than they were a year ago", lamented Pedro Nuno Santos.
The PS leader also presented concrete measures of the socialist program, classifying it as "serious, responsible and feasible to implement", such as the application of 6% VAT on electricity, the regulation of the price of bottled gas and the reduction of the Single Circulation Tax (IUC).
This is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. The PS and AD might as well amalgamate, for what little difference there is between them!
