“After having gone through all legal and procedural procedures, the Court of Auditors gave the green light and Cascais is moving forward with the installation of the public space video surveillance system”, indicates, in a statement, the municipality presided over by social democrat Carlos Carreiras.

According to the note, 444 cameras will be installed in “locations carefully chosen by the Public Security Police (PSP) and the National Republican Guard (GNR)”, based on the “history of incidents, crime rates, concentration of crowds and popular routes”.

“The public space video monitoring system aims to protect people and property, prevent crime, and promote better response capacity and coordination on the part of security forces,” explains the city government.

Cascais City Council also says that the captured images can be viewed at a Municipal Control and Security Center, a space that is being built, as well as at the PSP Lisbon Metropolitan Command or the GNR Lisbon Territorial Command.

The total investment in this video monitoring system is 12.5 million euros.
