According to “Travel Insights 2025: Focus on Europe”, a report prepared by Amadeus in collaboration with UN Tourism, Portugal is one of the destinations that leads in air bookings to Europe.
In the study, which provides a comprehensive overview of the European travel market, Portugal is one of the 10 most popular destinations in Europe, ranking seventh in both searches and bookings, holding the same position in relation to the 2024 report.
The ranking is led by Spain, followed by the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany and Greece, with Portugal ahead of destinations such as the Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland in terms of searches.
Bookings
In terms of bookings, Portugal occupies the same 7th position (the same place it occupied in 2024), however, there is a difference in the ranking compared to searches, with Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Germany occupying the same positions, with Turkey appearing in 6th place ahead of Portugal. The 8th, 9th and 10th places are occupied by Kazakhstan, Norway and Greece, respectively.
Analysing only the Southern Europe and Mediterranean Europe region, Portugal rises in searches, occupying 5th position, only surpassed by Spain, Italy, Turkey and Greece, but ahead of destinations such as Croatia, Cyprus, Israel, Malta and Albania.
In terms of bookings, Portugal improves and occupies 4th position, with Spain, Italy and Turkey appearing in front, but with Portugal overtaking Greece, Israel, Croatia, Malta, Cyprus and Serbia.
In Southern and Mediterranean Europe, Albania has the highest growth rate in searches (+30%), followed by Serbia (+23%) and Slovenia (+21%), with Portugal appearing in 10th position with a growth value of +9%.
Lisbon
When narrowing the analysis by cities in Southern and Mediterranean Europe, Lisbon appears in 6th place in searches, occupying the same position in bookings. Here, Istanbul leads the way, followed by Rome, Madrid, Barcelona and Milan, with the Portuguese capital ahead of Athens, Palma de Mallorca, Malaga and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
In terms of reservations, and with Lisbon in 6th place, Istanbul continues to lead, followed by Madrid, Rome, Barcelona and Milan.
Funchal and Ponta Delgada are also noteworthy, with Madeira in 3rd place among the cities with the highest growth rate in searches (+24%), only surpassed by Tirana (+31%) and Belgrade (+25%), but ahead of Milan, Luqa, Rome, Madrid, Athens, Istanbul and Florence.
In terms of cities with the highest growth rate in reservations, Ponta Delgada appears in 2nd place (+10%), only surpassed by Alicante (+15%). Here, the city on the island of San Miguel appears ahead of Palma de Mallorca, Palermo, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Venice, Zagreb, Split, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Athens.
Markets
In this analysis, Amadeus also reveals the source markets that most search for Southern Europe and the Mediterranean as a destination. Thus, the market with the highest growth rate in searches for this region is China (+218%), followed by Saudi Arabia (+39%), South Korea (+33%), Poland (+32%) and India (+31%).
The source markets with the highest growth rates for trips to Southern Europe and the Mediterranean are Poland (+12%), South Korea and Denmark (both with +11%).
