Major projects include Pavilion 7 refurbishment, MRI and CT upgrades, and renovating the historic D. António de Lencastre Pavilion. The Psychiatric Department is also being refurbished. These improvements aim to enhance healthcare quality and working conditions.

The Local Health Unit (ULS) of Guarda is launching a major rehabilitation and modernisation plan across several hospital facilities, backed by 8€ million in funding from the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). This investment includes both structural renovations and the acquisition of advanced medical equipment.

A public tender has been issued for the refurbishment of Pavilion 7, which houses the ULS headquarters, Public Health Unit, and other essential services. The project is valued at €2.9 million, with €2.5 million financed by the PRR, and is expected to be completed within 300 days.

Under the leadership of current chair Rita Figueiredo, the ULS administration has also secured €4.5 million for the acquisition of MRI and CT scan equipment to upgrade the Radiology Department at Sousa Martins Hospital. Public tenders for these devices, as well as for equipment destined for the Department of Child and Women’s Health located in Pavilion 5, will be launched in the coming days.

Another key initiative involves the restoration of the historic D. António de Lencastre Pavilion, part of the former Sousa Martins Sanatorium, to house the ‘A Ribeirinha’ Family Health Unit. Abandoned for nearly 50 years and in a state of serious disrepair, the building will undergo €3 million in renovations funded by the PRR. The goal is to relocate the unit from its current temporary setting to the city’s Health Park.

Additionally, the Psychiatric and Mental Health Department is also undergoing a €2 million refurbishment, with the tender already in progress.

According to ULS, these investments aim not only to improve healthcare services and infrastructure but also to enhance working conditions for health professionals and ensure more humane care for patients.
