A note on the BVM's website explains that the barracks and bathrooms at the fire station are "outdated" and "no longer offer the dignified conditions that firefighters deserve."
"We are talking about essential spaces for rest, hygiene, and recovery after long hours of service and demanding operations," they add.
According to the BVM, the fundraising campaign has "two important objectives" to fulfil.
The first objective is to renovate the dormitories and bathrooms, renovate the rest areas, improve the bathrooms, provide new lockers and equipment, and improve thermal comfort and hygiene.
The second objective is to create a solidarity space for the sale of used products. “In addition to the construction work, we intend to create a community space inspired by projects such as the Salvation Army's solidarity shops, where it will be possible to donate clothing, furniture, toys and utensils, buy used products at affordable prices, support families facing greater difficulties, generate sustainable income to help firefighters in the future, and promote reuse and reduce waste,” the statement reads.
Donations can be made through the GoFundMe platform, by bank transfer, or in cash at the BVM fire station office.
