This new supermarket will open in November in Esposende, in the Braga district. On 19 May, the company revealed that the store will feature a 1,900-square-metre sales area alongside its usual in-house sections, including a butcher, fishmonger, delicatessen, bakery and pastry counter, fruit and vegetable department, perfumery, pet care and household products, wine cellar, and its popular ready-to-eat takeaway with self-service dining options.
Mercadona has been steadily growing its presence in Portugal since opening its first store in Vila Nova da Gaia in 2019, as the retailer has now launched 72 supermarkets nationwide, and plans to exceed 80 locations by the end of 2026.
The company has confirmed that recruitment for the new Esposende branch is already underway, with vacancies available for shop assistants and other positions. Currently, Mercadona employs more than 7,500 people in Portugal. For those who are interested in employment, the supermarket chain is offering part-time contracts of 15 hours per week for weekend shifts, with salaries starting at €5,734 gross per year and rising to €7,843 gross annually, as well as meal allowances and extra pay for Sundays and public holidays.
