In 2016, 110 957 deaths were registered, which is more than 2,000 more on the year before.
Phenomena such as an extended heat wave from July to September and extreme cold in November and December, couple with an ageing population are believed to have pushed the death rate up to the historic new high.
Only in 1949 did more people die in Portugal than last year.
