According to latest Justice Ministry figures, the number of people behind bars in Portugal rise from around 11,000 to just over 14,000 since 2010, with the most significant increases coming after 2013.
The biggest rise came among female convicts, who saw their numbers swell by almost 38 percent, while the biggest increases among men was seen in age groups above 40.
