The numbers appear in the 4th monitoring report on water consumption and the application of water efficiency measures prepared by the Energy Agency (ADENE), within the scope of the Commitment to Water Efficiency in the Algarve.
The best results in reducing water consumption were recorded in irrigation systems, followed by improvements in the management and maintenance system and, thirdly, in equipment. At the end of November, 2,652 measures to reduce water consumption were in force, almost half of which (46%) are classified as structuring. This plan is coordinated by the Algarve Tourism Region, in conjunction with Turismo de Portugal and ADENE.
André Gomes, president of Turismo do Algarve, considers that “the evolution recorded is very positive, with the reduction in global consumption increasing from 13% to 16% in the last two months. The results now known are a relevant sectoral contribution to mitigating the problem of water scarcity in the Algarve, and represent direct financial savings for the more than 100 tourist enterprises that adhere to the 'Save Water' seal, which next year will also be extended to Local Accommodation, as well as other areas of activity in the regional tourism sector”.
It is worth remembering that the Commitment to Water Efficiency in the Algarve arises from a resolution of the Council of Ministers last February and implies the voluntary adherence of tourist enterprises to implement an action plan, aiming to implement water efficiency measures, between immediate and structuring, monitoring water consumption and the progress made in applying the measures. Tourist enterprises that adhere to the commitment are awarded the “Save Water” seal.
