The report found that 61 percent of people in Portugal trust most news, most of the time, a number only surpassed by Finland where 69 percent of the population trust most of the news, most of the time.

The report found lower levels of overall trust in 21 of the 46 markets assessed in the world, partly reversing the gains made at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, while the global average level of trust was 42 percent.

After Finland and Portugal, the next countries with a high level of trust in the news are South Africa (61 percent), Denmark (58 percent), Netherlands (56 percent), Norway (56 percent) and Thailand (53 percent).

At the other end of the scale, countries with the lowest levels of trust include the UK (34 percent), France (29 percent), Spain (32 percent) and the USA (26 percent).
