The Mediterranean Gardening Association for Portugal has organised the popular Mediterranean Garden Fairs in the Algarve since 2009. The Association shared that “These events are unique in Portugal and follow the successful plant fairs held in many other countries, such as the UK, France and Spain. This has encouraged local growers to produce climate appropriate plants for the gardeners of the Algarve.”
Adding that, “There are regular meetings based on sharing knowledge about appropriate gardening for Mediterranean climates. These can be a practical day school on Lavenders or Making a Dry Garden or a day visiting private gardens and recommended plant nurseries. Occasional newsletters are also distributed via email to keep everyone up to date with the latest information on events. There is also a series of free information leaflets available in four languages with basic dry garden advice.” https://www.mgaportugal.org/infoleaflets.html
The Association also revealed that “the autumn Fair of 2022 held in Silves attracted over 3000 visitors with 22 plant nurseries present plus other relevant exhibitors.”
What to expect from the Meditterranean Gardening Fair 2023
The Association shared that they will have native plants and seeds for sale from specialised suppliers, as well as ornamental and potted plants as well. Additionally, there will be fruit and aromatic trees as well as a wonderful range of succulents for sale. “This is an opportunity to buy the most suitable plants for your garden and benefit from the advice and guidance of experienced nursery owners, speakers and MGAP members.”
“There will also be an abundance of free talks, workshops and demonstrations with the theme of ‘Future Proof your Garden’ which is fitting due to the times of extreme drought and fire risk. This event will be attended by the Portuguese Environment Agency, through the Algarve Hydrographic Region Administration, with its "Alliance for Water" campaign.”
At the MGAP Bulb & Plant Sales stand there will be a selection of bulbs suitable for Algarve gardens, with plants from the gardens of Association members.
There will also be craft stands related to plants and gardening. High quality botanical art will also be present with cards and other media. The popular Plant Crèche is where you can leave your purchases while enjoying the various events scheduled.
Refreshments (including vegetarian) and coffee facilities will be available. There will also be a range of organic products for sale. The organisation asks that in order to reduce waste, visitors bring their own bags and boxes.
Our partner for this event is the Junta de Freguesia of Silves, and the organisation would like to thank its President, Tito dos Santos Coelho, and his team for their support.
