According to TasteAtlas, Pastel de Belém and Pastel de Nata are not the same thing. The Pastel de Belém won the award for best dessert in the world, while Pastel de Nata won the silver medal in this competition promoted by the guide. But not everyone agreed with this first place.

“Portugal copied it from Turkey”, was the comment of a user on Facebook, regarding the TasteAtlas publication, which chooses Pastel de Belém as the best dessert in the world. This user was not the only one to criticise the ranking. “Any cake from Italy, France, Brazil, Spain and even some regions of Germany, Poland and Czechia is better than this”.

The Pastel de Belém award comes just days after Portuguese cuisine was considered the fourth best in the world. According to RFM, the gastronomic guide considered that migas, cod, francesinha, feijoada, seafood rice and açorda are some of the best Portuguese dishes. At the top of the table of the best cuisines in the world was Italy, followed by Japan and Greece.
