In a statement, the Judiciary Police said that the arrests of the two drug couriers, aged 24 and 31, and the cocaine seized took place as part of two separate investigations led by the PJ's National Unit for Combating Drug Trafficking.

According to the PJ, both citizens were transporting the drug inside their bodies from a South American country to Lisbon.

The Judiciary Police said that despite the high risks to human life, criminal networks are still able to recruit couriers.

According to the police, they are often young adults in a situation of great economic or emotional deprivation who have as their 'modus operandi' the transport of significant amounts within their body, being "usually enticed with significant amounts of money and deceived with false information about the real risks they run, putting their own lives in danger countless times".
