In a statement, the GNR explains that the operation takes place within the scope of annual planning carried out by the European Traffic Police Network (RoadPol) and has the "aim of promoting safer behavior on the part of drivers and reducing serious road accidents".

The security force states that, in 2023, it recorded 55,312 road accidents, resulting in 16,911 minor injuries, 1,277 serious injuries, and 279 fatalities, and of the 2,143,736 drivers inspected by the GNR that year, 33,657 had a rate of blood alcohol content (BAC) higher than permitted by law.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or psychotropic substances "is a risk factor that has been the subject of increasing attention in road safety policies at the European level", highlights the GNR.
