Do you enjoy a good quiz – and helping out where you can? Well, then it sounds like you might want to consider joining Helping Hands Algarve (HHA).

Started 15 years ago, this charity group meets on the second Tuesday of every month at the Museu do Traje de São Brás de Alportel and puts their brains to answering particularly puzzling quiz questions while, at the same time, lending a hand to help out the less fortunate.

I spoke to the representative of HHA, Richard Brice, to find out more…

Solidarity Art Scholarships

On the 6th of June, HHA, with the support of the Rotary Club of Estoi Palace International, helped the Câmara Municipal de São Brás de Alportel to launch a new program. It aims to provide additional lessons in anything from visual arts and theatre to music and dance to young people who show a talent in the arts but who otherwise wouldn’t have the financial means to pursue it.

Further funding

The charity helps out in many ways. Some examples include helping support children with Cerebral Palsy find their balance while riding horses at Pine Trees Riding Stables in Vale do Lobo and replacing a rotting handrail outside the Casa de Primeira Infância in Loulé – as well as building a bike shed to park the bicycles they donated. They even provided portable fridges to keep the bombeiros watered with cold drinking water while they bravely fight fires.

Even a few cents – make sense!

All their support comes from quizzes and raffles. Every little helps! Richard Brice described them, with thinly veiled affection, as “pesky copper coins” – but these coins truly add up and go a long way in allowing this group of caring quiz whizzes to help out where they can.
