The proposal, which was submitted to public consultation for a period of 30 days, remains unchanged regarding the idea of increasing the value of the tourist tax for overnight stays, from two to four euros, per guest and per night.
The document also includes the update of the tourist tax for arrival by sea, from one to two euros, per passenger, although the value that is now proposed to be updated is the one that began to be applied this year, with the beginning of the collection of this tax to cruise passengers.
According to the proposal that Lusa had access to, the council intends “for the Municipal Tourist Overnight Tax to come into force from September 1st and the Municipal Tourist Tax for Arrival by Sea on the day following the publication of the amendment to the Regulation".
Why not 5€ per person per night if they at it. Dublin was planning to introduce 1% tourist tax and I think it was scrapped. That tax looked tiny in comparison what is introduced by Lisbon overlords.

They should make it at least 10 euros per night. The higher the better. Anything they can do to discourage tourists from coming to Lisbon would be a good thing. Banning the cruise ships would also be a great idea.

Agree with Henry. I've just returned to NZ after 10 days in Portugal including three days in Lisbon. I'm embarrassed to have contributed to the over tourism experienced by this lovely city. The crowds really did diminish the experience - it must be awful for the locals. We have the same problem in NZ and it seems that the economic benefits of tourism are overstated with the profits channeled into a few hands. A decent tax will enable money to go to maintaining infrastructure used by the tourists.

I don't know which is more ridiculous: the "couvert" demanded by restaurants or the four-euro tax on visitors.

I´ve just visited Lisbon, for the first time in a while. I have to say - the cruise ships docked right by the heart of the city are a real eyesore.
