According to the note, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) anticipated a gradual rise in temperature, low humidity across the territory and strong winds in the highlands (especially at night).
The predicted atmospheric conditions translate into “an increased risk of fire, with conditions favourable to the possible occurrence and spread of rural fires”, and increased difficulty in fighting the flames.
“ANEPC recommends adapting behaviours and attitudes to the situation of rural fire danger, namely the adoption of the necessary prevention and precautionary measures, in accordance with current legislation, and paying special attention to the evolution of the fire danger during this period”, the statement states.
Also today, the IPMA indicated that there are more than 60 municipalities in the districts of Leiria, Santarém, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Faro, Coimbra, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real and Bragança under maximum rural fire danger.
According to IPMA calculations, the fire danger will remain high in some districts at least until Monday.
