The firefighter from the Odemira corporation, who was at the Hospital de São José, in Lisbon, died today following injuries caused by the crash of a firefighting vehicle on Wednesday, said a source from the corporation.
A resident of the parish of São Luís, the firefighter was part of the Odemira corporation “for around 20 years” and was part of one of Odemira's Permanent Intervention Teams (EIP).
On Wednesday, the EIP made up of five members, was called to intervene “in an authorized fire” in Saboia, inside the municipality of Odemira, which “got out of control”, explained the president of the humanitarian association.
“They had done [the work] and were returning home” when the firefighting vehicle crashed, causing injuries to the five firefighters, the president of the Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters of Odemira, António Camilo, explained to Lusa.
This accident resulted in three other serious injuries, one of which was transported to Santa Maria Hospital, also in Lisbon, while the other two were taken to Portimão Hospital.
Questioned by Lusa, António Camilo stated that the firefighter who is at Santa Maria Hospital, in Lisbon, with “a bruise on his head”, continues to receive care, despite being “relatively better” on Thursday.
One of the firefighters transported to the Portimão Hospital “was operated on yesterday [Thursday] afternoon for a femur fracture” and the other firefighter, “with facial bone fractures”, was transported to the Faro Hospital, where he underwent exams and ended up being discharged “late afternoon” on Thursday.
The firefighter who had been transferred to Beja Hospital, with “a bruise on his head and a deep cut on his scalp”, also “came home yesterday [Thursday] in the late afternoon”, he added.
