“I have aligned my thinking that Benfica is one of the best, if not the best thing that Portugal has, the best brand, we have Cristiano Ronaldo too, but he has a limited lifespan. It is the brand that we have had since the Discoveries that can take the country further. We lost almost everything and, on a global scale, today we are only great in football. It's all sevens in my life. I am also the seventh child and was born at seven in the morning. I think the stars are aligned to create a unique project there,” said the businessman, in an interview on Renascença.
“Benfica is more than a football club. When it wins, the Portuguese GDP rises. It must achieve leadership in Europe. And I think there are conditions for that. Serious, credible, first-rate management is needed. And this challenge, in a way, excites me", he continued.
Marco Galinha, shareholder of the Global Media Group, assessed the current financial situation of the team.
“What worries me about financial management is the rising costs. I studied the accounts in detail, it's not a good picture. Service provision is increasing at an unprecedented rate and revenue is falling. Benfica deserves to have management like Bayern. It is a club with European stature, with no debts whatsoever, with professional and exemplary people who are there because they don't need the club", he stated, arguing that Benfica "must continue to belong to the members".
“Benfica has to have members who bring value to Benfica. There shouldn't be members who take advantage of Benfica. It would be a huge shame to have someone who controlled Benfica in the majority, it would take away the club's total value. It is the largest Portuguese institution. It would be the same thing as selling the Jerónimos Monastery. Benfica is Portugal”, he added.
