"The uncertainty is terrible, and with the uncertainty the distribution chain in the United States has stopped orders for Portuguese wines and wines from Europe and, therefore, at this moment we are facing a terrible problem and we are not able to sell", said the president of the association.
Paulo Amorim also fears that, if the tariffs come to fruition, "the majority of the losses will be borne by wine producers", which he considers a "gigantic injustice".
The official spoke to journalists after meeting, along with 16 other sector associations, with the Minister of Economy and the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, in Lisbon, as part of the tariffs announced by the President of the United States.
The president of ANCEVE also said that Portuguese wine needs "a new Porter plan", which "helps to promote Portuguese wine in a more dynamic way", taking into account that "wine carries the name of Portugal far and wide".
More competely unnecessary insanity brought to you by the "stable genius."

More than 50% of Americans apologize for the disruption caused by the on-and-off tariff situation. We love Portugal and wish you only the best.

Portuguese wine is amazing!

It is so disgusting what the US president is doing not only to small businesses in the US but all over the world. He cares about nothing other than himself and who voted for him.

As someone who lives in both New York City and Nazaré, Portugal, I doubt that this is a big loss. Portuguese wines, which are all quite wonderful, are hard to find in the USA, and when you find them, the selection is very limited unless you are around Newark, New Jersey. I asked my local wine seller in New York why he doesn't carry Portuguese wines and he told me that they just don't sell. After the tariff issue is resolved, Portugal needs a major branding and advertising effort to compete in the U.S. wine market.

I wonder how long it will be before we see a repeat of September 1, 1939 when another autocratic malignant narcissist decided he wanted to rule the world?

I disagree with the comment about the US people not buying PT wine. The US is a BIG country and in MA and RI it flies off the shelves. But at this point no one can trust the US federal government. That is the REAL problem.

Steve from the USA,
Trump ran on tariffs, if necessary, to bring trade equality. He ran on sealing the borders form illegal immigration, deporting illegal immigrants, etc. He won an election, winning the majority of votes, on these policies. He is the chosen leader for 8 of latest 12 years in the US (at the end of his second term).
The Republicans also took over majority in the House and Senate. They won everything they could, majority wise.
Sure seems the US people wanted to go back to Trump, and Republican control of government, after four years of Biden and Democratic party control. They literally voted to try Democratic leadership in 2020, didn't like the result, and went back to Trump, choosing him over the Democrats, choosing a Republican Congress over one of Democratic majority.
Your "More than 50% of Americans....." comment doesn't fit the will of the voter.
Trump wants trade equality around the world. That's fair. He asked for trade equality from the EU, and was denied. So tariffs were put in place. Want to end the tariffs? We in the EU need to agree to trade equality.
What's so wrong with equality? The truth is, the tariffs are the fault of European leaders who wouldn't allow equality. Sadly the people suffer the consequences.
Your "more than 50%" may be based on approval rating, for which Trump's is about 10% higher than Biden on his departure, when all polls are averaged. Because he is a mid to high 40% does not mean the US people don't support tariffs. A drop below 50% could be caused by other actions, such as sealing the border, deportations, etc.
Don't apologize for your people. You don't represent them. You are, of course, free to apologize for yourself.

Sadly, I thing Greg might have a point, I didn't believe in reincarnation, but it appears that Adolf is back and living in the White House!

My friend and I are starting a webshop with only Portuguese wines, the target market is Sweden as the choices are restricted as there is a monopoly here. We will do all we can to sell as much as possible to Sweden

Other than the fact that this is just stupid, the above poster is correct.
We go back to the states twice a year.
In an ABC or similar chain the Portuguese selection consists of a few bottles.
We like our nightly port and finding it is difficult.
If you ever see a Port from Long Island, do yourself a favor...don't drink it.

I was turned on by a sommelier in Seattle telling me about Portuguese wines in 2015. People will miss their Pirt, Madeira wine, best selling green wine and in my opinion, all the wines from Alentejano. All regions have great wine. Never had a bad bottle in the almost 10 years living here. 45 is foolish.

Everyone should remove anything American off their shelves. We certainly won't be buying anything from there!
By Trevor from Algarve on 16 Apr 2025, 20:38
Totally agree with Allan Tannenbaum, Portugal doesn’t do a good job of marketing their products outside of Portugal. Wonderful wine, cheese, shoes all need a major boost by international marketing specialists.

Send your wine to Canada. We've no US wines on our shelves and love Portuguese wines. A very yummy solution.

Thank you for all of you talking good about portuguese wines... We have been making them for far longer the US have been around and we will continue to do so.... This hiccup in politics will not tarnish the long term relationship. For wine, for portugal, and for the world... But please all our US friends- take a hand on your country, put it back to normal... Nobody wants you as a leader, people want you as a friend... You're neither right now :) big hugs from a portuguese guy

Just export to UK instead. They can't get good variety of Ptg wine there, mainly Mateus rose!
