"As a precaution, it is necessary to interrupt traffic on Avenida de Dom Carlos I, in the area of the Douro bar, from 20:00 this Wednesday. Traffic will be restored as soon as sea conditions allow, with a reassessment of the situation in the early morning of Friday".
The council admits that, although there is still no warning from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), this situation may occur again on Saturday and Sunday.
According to the council, the existing yellow warning for wind was updated by the IPMA, which forecasts gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour (km/h) until 21:00 Thursday.
Heavy and persistent rainfall which may be accompanied by thunderstorms is also predicted.
For Thursday and until 06:00 on Friday, forecasts also point to a significant increase in high seas, with waves from the west/southwest of five to seven meters high, which could reach 10-13 meters maximum height.
In view of the forecasts, Civil Protection recommends that the population pay special attention to passing and parking near wooded areas, due to the possibility of falling branches or trees, due to strong winds.
It also advises precaution when passing esplanades, festival support structures, scaffolding, placards, which could be uprooted by the winds.
