The man who was sailing solo is understood to have been drifting around 50 miles north of São Miguel Island since Monday.
The operation was described as a risky rescue due to the extremely stormy conditions and involved elements of both the Navy and the Air Force.
The man and the Navy rescuers were flown by helicopter to Lajes on Terceira Island.
