The date of September 24 was defended by PSD, PS, CDS-PP and Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) when the head of state heard the parties with seats in the regional parliament of Madeira, on June 21, while the PCP defended that the elections were supposed to be in October.

The Electoral Law of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira establishes that the President of the Republic schedules these elections "at least 60 days in advance or, in the event of dissolution, at least 55 days in advance".

The same law determines that elections for a new legislature "take place between September 22nd and October 14th of the year corresponding to the term of the legislature" and that "the day of the elections must fall on a Sunday or a public holiday".

PSD and CDS-PP, who are together in the Regional Government of Madeira headed by the social democrat Miguel Albuquerque, decided to run together in the regional elections of September 24th.

Miguel Albuquerque has governed Madeira for eight years, since April 2015, after almost four decades with Alberto João Jardim at the head of the Regional Government and PSD of Madeira.

After Jardim left, the PSD led by Miguel Albuquerque won the early regionals on March 29, 2015 with 44% of the votes, achieving its 11th absolute majority in the Madeiran parliament, with 24 seats out of 47.

In the elections of September 22, 2019, the Social Democrats lost for the first time the absolute majority in the Regional Legislative Assembly of Madeira, electing 21 deputies out of a total of 47, with about 40% of the votes, and formed a PSD coalition government /CDS-PP.
