"This had never happened before! He is the first person to do this", said Lesya Arkadievna, the deputy governor for the Kyiv region, when he saw Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa enter a trench in Moshchun.

Moshchun, a town on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital, was decimated during the Russian occupation and, unlike, for example, Bucha, there has been little headway made in recovery.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was not the first leader to visit the site, but he was the first to go into the trenches there.

"I've come here with several presidents and ministers and none of them has done this", said Lesya Arkadievna.

Members of the regional administration observed the moment with some surprise.

"It reminds me of the trenches of the First World War", commented the President of the Republic as soon as he left the trench with dirt on his blazer.
