“The probability of occurrence [of a tsunami] is very low, but it is up to Civil Protection to imagine that it could happen. We have a scenario and we exercised that scenario so that our professionals can know the best way to respond,” he explained.

António Nunes was speaking as part of the ceremony commemorating the 42nd anniversary of the Regional Civil Protection Service, in Funchal.

The PROCIVEX 2024 exercise, which was presented today, will take place on May 23 and is based on a scenario that considers the possibility of a cliff fall on the Desertas islands, located around 40 kilometers from Funchal, causing a 'tsunami', which would particularly seriously affect the municipalities of Funchal, Santa Cruz, Machico and the island of Porto Santo.
