After renovations costing over three million euros, the new Largo de São Sebastião da Pedreira in Lisbon is now completed, with the new area featuring more trees and less traffic from cars. The goal of this project, which started in February of last year and encompassed a number of nearby arteries, was to strengthen the afforestation and enhance the area’s bicycle and pedestrian traffic.

In order to preserve as many parking spaces for homeowners as feasible, the municipality widened the walkways while decreasing the width of the carriageways. Conversely, a kiosk was positioned in the Largo with the intention of creating an area for leisure and socialising. As noted by Carlos Moedas, the mayor of Lisbon, “a lot of work has also been done that is not so visible”, adding that “there is still a lot to be done in Lisbon in terms of requalification”.

“It was a very important work. Look at this, how beautiful it is” said Carlos Moedas, to the about thirty guests present at the opening ceremony. The mayor also thanked the locals and merchants for their “patience”, and highlighted other initiatives that have been conducted, “For example, we have already planted more than 30 thousand trees”.
