The inhabitants of the beautiful countryside of Senhora do Verde do not have the warmest of greetings. “The noise of the gas of the balloon is not only scary it disturbs the animals. Least to say, us humans at the break of dawn.” No. Yes. As elegant as they look from afar, up close, they are quite frightening.

A recent loss, meant a move, to a new life and a new beginning. The poor pet, bewildered at the loss of her ‘dad’ and the usual stroll in the morning and last thing at night was greatly missed. There was light at the end of the tunnel for the little dog as the move meant, lots of new friends, sniffs, and new places for “walkies”.

Jenny Clarke, President of the Association for Animal Protection Algarve has a knowing look on her face. “We all think, that we are immortal. Live forever.” Yup. “Unfortunately, some of us die tragically, for the family, too early in their lifetime, or on occasions an illness sets in.”

There are occasions when there is a survivor who can manage and life continues as normal as is possible. “When we have that chance to review our situation, and we have pets to think of, the dear ones we cannot do without. We should do it then and there.” The afterlife does not allow us to deal with the earthly mundane requirements of our survivors human or otherwise. True. ‘Project Legacy’ was a practical solution. ARA, the Animal Rescue Algarve, Shelter’s owner Sid Richardson came up with the idea through the statistics of the animals abandoned at ‘Cabanita’ looking for re-homing. “APAA was also looking for answers amongst their membership.” None of the paperwork is heavy duty, and the private, step-by-step arrangement can be made with the owners and ARA quietly so that both parties are happy with the outcome. Well almost. “Death or severe illnesses, are never easy to discuss,” Jenny adds. “We should try to be more open about these taboos. After all, it is with our dearest friends in mind. Our furry four-legged ones.” True. “Financially things hopefully can be mutually discussed too. Animals need vet care and feeding and it costs. A practical pragmatic approach.” Right.

Talking of which both APAA’s charity shops in Alvor and Silves are doing more than just ‘well’ takings are on the increase. Visitors include residents looking for good quality items to make over existing homes, gardens, and patios. Also, visitors who are looking for a special gift. Also found on site are Jenny’s homemade jams, preserves, marmalades, and chutneys.
