Volunteers and local leaders in Oruro, a city in Bolivia’s highlands, gathered last weekend to clean up the polluted shores of Lake Uru Uru, which is home to flamingos and serves as a crucial stop for migratory birds.

The lake has been contaminated with mineral waste and rubbish, but since 2021, annual clean-up efforts have restored around 19 hectares of land that had been buried under debris.
Andres Aruquipa, the manager of a city sanitation company, anticipated that the clean-up over the weekend would gather approximately 180 metric tons of waste.
