As soon as the agreement with the owner was reached with Pangea, the association made regular visits to Julie to conduct health checks and get to know her a little better before transporting the elephant.

According to BornFree, Julie’s owner, Victor Hugo Cardinali, has been welcoming and in touch with Pangea’s team, mentioning the elephant's current diet and care. The Pangea’s Sanctuary Manager, Ryan Hockley, was introduced to Julie’s caretaker and agreed on a visit schedule to organise her move to the sanctuary.

Pangea’s veterinarian, Graça Oliveira, was also present to conduct health tests, which are required before Julie can travel. The same doctor had already treated Julie’s companion, Samba.

Julie is an elephant who has been in the circus since 1988, after she arrived in Portugal from southern Africa as a young calf. BornFree states that the owner’s knowledge of Julie is crucial to ensuring a safe transition.

In her 40s, Julie already has some health conditions, which are normal for her age. The elephant already experiences some joint and mobility issues, and Pangea Sanctuary can help rehabilitate that and ensure a healthier environment for Julie.
