Spain have been crowned champions of Europe for a fourth time after beating England 2-1 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

The game itself lacked quality in attacking areas in the first half, with neither keeper tested. However, it didn’t take long for Nico Williams to provide the quality needed to beat Jordan Pickford as he gave Spain the lead in the 47th minute.

Despite suggestions that Gareth Southgate was pragmatic in his approach, the England manager made several attacking substitutions including taking Harry Kane off for Ollie Watkins and bringing on Cole Palmer, who immediately equalised.

England failed to make their momentum count, thus letting La Roja back into the game. Real Sociedad’s Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winner from a Marc Cucurella cross in the 86th minute.

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has now become the first manager to win the Under-19 Euros, Under-21s Euros, the Nations League and the European Championships.

Elsewhere, despite kick-off being delayed for over an hour, Argentina managed to beat Colombia 1-0 in the Copa America at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida. Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez scored the only goal of the game in extra-time, after Lionel Messi was substituted after 66 minutes.
