The national strike was called by the Federation of Agriculture, Food, Beverage, Hotel and Tourism Trade Unions of Portugal (FESAHT) and includes workers in school and hospital canteens, food factories, restaurants in motorway service areas and concession bars.

The trade union federation is demanding the negotiation of a collective labour agreement, salary increases of over 150 euros for all workers, the updating of the food subsidy and the payment of remuneration for workers with split working hours or who work shifts, and for weekend work.

In the strike notice, delivered on 17 September, FESAHT also advocates the reduction of working hours to 35 hours per week, 25 working days of holidays and the binding nature of all workers hired on a fixed-term contract.

As for specific cases, the federation is demanding the payment of a risk allowance for workers in hospital and prison canteens, and full-time contracts in school canteens that include food preparation.

The strike will also be marked by a gathering, starting at 9:30 am, at the Congress of the Portuguese Hotel, Restaurant and Similar Association, which will take place at the Aveiro Exhibition Park.
