The Michelin Guide Ceremony Portugal 2024 was presented on 16 January at the Solar da Música Nova Auditorium in Loulé. The event will take place on 27 February at the NAU Salgados Palace & Congress Center in Guia, on the coast of Albufeira.

Representing Portugal will be seven renowned chefs who together have nine Michelin stars. Dieter Koschina, Vila Joya Restaurant in Albufeira, Hans Neuner, Ocean Restaurant in Porches, both with two stars. Chefs with one star will include João Oliveira from the Vista Restaurant in Portimão, João Lopes from the Bon Bon Lagoa restaurant, Liborio Buonocore from the Gusto by Heinz Beck restaurant, Louis Anjos from the Al sud restaurant in Lagos and Luís Brito from the A ver Tavira restaurant.

Of these fantastic chefs, it will be Chefs Dieter Koschina and João Oliveira who will coordinate the line-up of Algarve chefs who will provide the guests with a dinner of some of the most emblematic dishes of Portuguese gastronomy.

According to the organisation, “the tourist, cultural and gastronomic richness of the Algarve makes the region a landmark for highlighting the Portuguese culinary dimension with the presentation of the Michelin Portugal Guide 2024. With the organisation of its own event in Portugal, the great selection of restaurants and the following distribution of editorial and communication content, the Guide contributes to the promotion of Portugal as a gastronomic destination of reference in Europe.”

The ceremony will be hosted by Catarina Furtado, one of the most popular faces on Portuguese television. Presenter, actress, author and documentary maker, Catarina Furtado is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund, founder of the Corações com Coroa Association and, in 2005, was honoured with the rank of Commander of the Order of Merit by the President of the Republic Jorge Sampaio.

In addition to Catarina Furtado, the NAU Salgados Palace & Congress Centre will be home to other Portuguese celebrities such as radio and television presenter and communicator Fernando Alvim, who will transmit his positive energy to all those who attend the event in person and via streaming.

Algarve - the Flavour of Southern Europe

Nuno Pereira, Institutional Relations Portugal & Good Michelin Lifestyle Spain & Portugal, has announced the launch of a campaign called "Algarve - the Flavour of Southern Europe". This campaign aims to maximise the visibility of the Algarve and Portugal.

"The Michelin Guide will launch a major communication campaign under the slogan "Algarve, the Flavour of Southern Europe", centred on three fundamental elements of the Algarve's gastronomic influences: the mountains, the sea and the estuary. The campaign includes different physical and digital activations, involving the chef community, celebrities and the general public, as well as a media plan that combines digital and conventional press, with a series of specific formats and content."

To start this campaign, the first Gala Debate will take place on 6 February at the Portimão Museum, located in the former São Francisco fish canning factory (Feu & Hermanos, Lda.), which is part of the European Industrial Heritage Route.

"The Debate, which will be moderated by TVI journalist Paulo Salvador, will feature exceptional guests who will analyse and give their views on how gastronomy can become a powerful engine for boosting the tourism sector and influencing the cultural identity of a destination, becoming a differentiating factor also from a sustainability perspective," they said.

The debate will feature "José Avillez, one of Portugal's best gastronomic ambassadors and chef of the restaurants Belcanto (two Michelin Stars), Encanto (one Michelin Star) and Tasca by José Avillez (one Michelin Star); Marlene Vieira, who takes diners to discover the richness of Portuguese gastronomy at Zunzum Gastrobar (Bib Gourmand) and Restaurante Marlene (Recommended); Lídia Monteiro, member of the board of directors of Turismo de Portugal; Rafel Tonon, journalist specialising in gastronomy, coordinator of the Master's Degree in Journalism and Gastronomic Communication at the Basque Culinary Center in the Basque Country (Spain); João Wengorowius, passionate about gastronomy, founder and CEO of WB/Brand Strategy Advisory, and author of the book "We Chefs"; and Nuno Nobre, consultant in food culture and gastronomic tourism, professor at Lusófona University, project manager at the UN and the EU, as well as founder of the Ericeira International Sea Urchin Festival and the World Food Institute".
